OMaD - Week 53 Recap

So. I'm completely off in counting my days. but the title dates are correct. This is totally something that I will be working on in 2016!

This is the last update for the 2015's challenge of One Mile a Day. I didn't do too well during the fall, and especially in the winter, but over all I did a really good job!

December 27- December 31

Day 361: 0 Miles - Sunday after the tornado. Everything didn't since in until that night. I was huge bundle of emotions (also gotta thank the hormones too), and I totally ugly cried all over my boyfriend. It scared me to know that he was so close to being hurt or worse. Before then after losing my car keys (to discover that my brother had them in his car... as he was driving back to Houston) then using my spare set. My guy and I hit the the Galleria to try to find some clothes. Then my family showed up and we went ice skating! I had never been ice skating before, but I did use to roller blade back in the day. It was a lot of fun and I would totally do it again!

Day 362: 0 Miles - Spent the day with the family. I had wanted to go for a run, but I didn't feel awesome enough.

Day 3630 Miles - Back to work again!

Day 364: 0 Miles - More work.

Day 365: 0 Miles - After work, my guy cooked me a surprised dinner (be jealous, ladies!) of Steak au Poivre! Then we watched some American Horror Story Asylum. We barely made it to midnight, but we did it!

Total Miles this week: 00 Miles

Miles to Date: 870.48 Miles

OMaD - Week 52 Recap

I am soooo late with this post! But, as to be expected in some respects, I did NOTHING this week either! It was CHRISTMAS week that went totally crazy!!!

December 20 - December 26

Day 248: 0 Miles - I didn't any workout because I was on a mission to get my mom's birthday present worked on before I headed out to work!

Day 249: 0 Miles - I got to see my guy for some last minute Christmas shopping.

Day 2500 Miles - I had to work today, so pretty much it was me sitting and eating cookies all day.

Day 251: 0 Miles - First day of my three day Christmas break! I was so happy. I spent some time with my guy after he was free from work. Then I headed down to the family house. I started to kick my self that I didn't pack my running gear! I finally got the urge to go for a run! The first time since the marathon!

Day 252: 0 Miles - Christmas Eve!

Day 253: 0 Miles - Christmas Day! As usual I'm the first one up! I was ready for cinnamon rolls and coffee. Slowly but surely the family (including the dogs and cats) woke up. Surprisingly enough, my dad was also up and ready. Mom, sister and I took turns trying to wake up my brother and his girlfriend. They finally made an appearance and we were ready to go for presents! After unwrapping gifts galore it was time to bake some cookies and start roasting the turkey! My boyfriend came down after he did his own family thing. It was an awesome Christmas!!

Day 254: 0 Miles - Omigosh! This day I will never forget. If anyone may remember... I live in the Dallas area. To be more exact far east Dallas area. I left work late because of the storms. Because I did that I saw the tornado from the south as I driving to the family. It hit the 190/30 intersection area really 10 minutes before I got to the house, which was close by. My boyfriend missed the intersection by just a couple of minutes. We all had guardian angels that day. It still scares me.

OMaD - Week 41 Recap

One Mile a Day update of my fitness challenge with tidbits of my life thrown in. I've been so lazy on my rest days, but I guess that's OK in some respects.

October 4 - October 10

Day 271: 10.01 Mile -It was a nice morning for  10 miler! We're finally in a Fall season here... Yay! I actually had to find my awesome purple running capris and a running tee to wear for this run! I felt better than I have had for the past week. I wasn't too sore or and my hip flexors weren't too achy, which is great. Afterwards I got to see a few friends throughout the day. So nice.

Day 272: 1 Mile - Took a walk after dinner. I wore a tee and some track pants, but I almost wish I had a light pullover. It gets a little chilly at night sometimes (or at least I think so!).

Day 273: 4.02 Miles - First mid-week 4 mile run. It definitely kept me on my toes in the fact that I have to do something other than 3 on a Tuesday morning!

Day 274: 0 Mile -Nothing. Nothing other than stuffing my face with pizza and a couple of s'mores. Yeah. I'm so healthy. Hee hee.

Day 275: 7.01 Miles - I did not want to run this morning. I have no motivation. Ugh. But I did force myself out the door and drove to White Rock Lake during morning rush hour to run the miles. I had just enough time to get home, shower, eat some eggs, snooze for 10 minutes before getting coffee and going to work. Work was a looooong day too.

Day 276: 3.11 Miles - I was surprised a how well this run went, especially after yesterday's! My speed was back. My cadence was up. No walking breaks. It was... nice! Ok, so maybe that half marathon on Sunday isn't going to be so bad (I was being pessimistic yesterday).

Day 277: 0 Mile -Well, I had the day off, which was nice cause I had a really rough night (I learned I make mistakes still and guys are jerks!). I got to hang with a good friend. We went to a local craft fair where I bought some awesome earrings and a ring. Then I bought a cute vintage dress at a resale shop. Then I decided to splurge (Ha!) and bought a Halloween costume for technically my first Halloween party.

Total Miles this week: 25.15 Miles

Miles to Date: 627.61 Miles

OMaD - Week 40 Recap

Another laaaate OMaD post!

September 27- October 3

Day 264: 12.02 Mile - This run wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. The first 6 miles were sort of easy! Then Miles 7 - 9/10 were harder. Mile 10/10.5 - 12 were HARD. Ugh. My hips were getting tired towards the end, and I had drunk too much water right before the last mile. I'll make sure I watch that next time around. After the run I got to see the movie Everest with the family, and I was really, really surprised how I liked it. I almost cried at the end. But I saved myself because I had a date afterwards and I didn't bring my makeup to reapply! Oh, and the date went well.

Day 265: 1 Mile - A doggy walk with the family pups and the Mom.

Day 266: 3.11 Miles - My legs were a little achy today, but I it may be because I haven't been diligent on taking my iron this past week. Or it's just the fact that I'm tired. It was nice though.

Day 267: 0 Mile - No cross-training. I chilled for a bit before having dinner with a friend.

Day 268: 6.02 Mile - This was a good run. I was so tired all day, though. If I wasn't trying to work I was taking naps on my breaks!

Day 269: 3.11 Mile - Whew! Last run of the week! Yay! In happier news I did get my Fitletics bottles for my belt. Now I feel more secure that I have some water with me on my runs.

Day 270: 0 Mile - I know I didn't walk this day. I had a busy day at work, and decided to to just chill and prep for my 10 miler in the morning.

Total Miles this week: 25.26 Miles

Miles to Date: 602.46 Miles

OMaD - Week 39 Recap

One Mile a Day update. I'm running tired and so everything is being past laaate!

September 20 - September 26

Day 257: 7.01 Miles - This was a tough run. I didn't want to wake up after staying out late for a friend's birthday the night before. Ugh. But I made it out to White Rock Lake to run the blasted 7 miles that was popping up on my marathon training schedule. I did it. My thighs were sore from running the 5k the previous morning too! But, I did it and it's done. I hope that my runs get better.

Day 2580 Miles - I totally slept in till 10am today and was still coming off of being upset about my run and other things that have made me a bundle of emotions yesterday. So I just hung around with my mom helping her do things, which was nice. On the plus side, though, yet another person thought I looked too young to be 28 years old and was in shock that I was actually 30! Score!

Day 259: 3.11 Miles - I managed to get up and run my 5k at the park. Yay. I need to get my head straight again, thought.

Day 260: 0 Miles - Well, after good intentions last night to try to run this morning instead of Friday (switching my cross-training day with a short run day), I decided to catch more ZZZZs and do something after work. Oh! I tried to buy a replacement bottle for my Fitletics belt just to discover that my closest running store doesn't sell them any more! I have one more spot to try before I face a 12 miler next Sunday with just one little water bottle and water fountains. Grrrr!

Day 261: 6.01 Miles - This was a good run, surprisingly! I was glad that it was since all previous runs were tough. The air was nice and just cool enough. I felt good mentally and physically too, which was really nice. It was a good day until I started to get a migraine at work. Boo!

Day 262: 3.11 Miles - The usual 5k in the morning before work! I was a little worried about one of my shins since I was having little aches since the night before. I need to foam roll! I know I say that ALL the time, but seriously, I have two of them and I don't use them. Am I stupid or something? (No, I'm not, but I had to say it!).

Day 263: 0 Mile - I didn't walk today after work since my plans changed. I decided to have dinner with my family, and chat with a new friend for a while.

Total Miles this week: 19.24 Miles

Miles to Date: 577.20 Miles

OMaD - Week 38 Recap

One Mile a Day update of my fitness challenge with better weather and fun!

September 13 - September 19

Day 25010.1 Miles -  Wow! What a great day! The weather was perfect for my run (low 60s) and even with wearing a t-shirt I didn't sweat too much or over heat. Actually, overall, the run was great and, dare I say, easy? After my run I hung around the lake for a while as my parents drove over with their dogs so they could try out the new doggy park, which was a lot of fun for everyone. After that I managed to get home just in time to clean up and eat something before heading out to the Dallas Museum of Art to meet a fellow. Yes, I totally rocked my pair of Oofos on a date! By the time I got home I was exhausted and my legs were achy, but it was wonderful day! I really hope I have more like this one!

Day 2510 Miles - I intended to go for a walk after dinner, but I was starting to get anxious about some things. So instead of hoping a walk would clearing my head (but knew it probably wouldn't and just make things worse) I decided to plant myself in from of the TV for distraction. It worked a little bit.

Day 252: 3.12 Miles - I'm loving this cooler morning weather! I got in a 5k in, and felt pretty good. I also got some good news this morning, which is a total bonus! I'll give more details soon enough!

Day 253: 3 Miles - Cross training day! I did 2 miles on the cycle, which made my thighs achy. I walked a mile to work that out before doing some light core and arm work. I also did something totally nuts this morning too! More details coming soon!

Day 254: 5.04 Miles -This was a hard run. First I didn't want to wake up. Second my cycling from last night made the light hills hard to do. For the first time this training season I did 2 mile intervals on a 5 mile run, which I'm ok with.

Day 255: 1 Mile -I walked a mile around my home instead of running my typical 3 miles. Why? I have a 5k race tomorrow morning!

Day 256: 3.11 Miles - My mom and I ran in the Plano Balloon Fest 5k race. I intending to take it "easy" by doing my average 11:30 pace or so since I have 7 miles the next day, but you know what? My body had other plans. So! I accidentally PRed with a 30:27 5k! It was a good race, but due to incoming weather the hot air balloons didn't launch. Afterwards we tried to get the free runner yummies, but the line was ridiculously long. So, walked around the fest a bit, chatted with a running friend for a few minutes, then we were off to try this breakfast place... that had a really long wait! Ack! We ended up at McDonald's for breakfast, but it was totally yummy! After that my day was just relaxing since I took the whole day off... all the while waiting for a dude to text me back. Oh, and I got to wear some girly high heels to a friend's birthday night too! Granted... I got home uber late.

Total Miles this week: 25.37 Miles

OMAD - Week 37 Recap

One Mile a Day update of my fitness challenge with a tad of person life tidbits and some donuts and pizza thrown in!

September 6 - September 12

Day 243: 9.02 miles - Boy, was it a humid morning! I did my LSD for marathon training in. It was definitely a work out since I had to introduce intervals. However, that being said I was able to complete the run 10 minutes faster than my previous 9.03 run! I also had a delicious donut from Krispy Kreme today. It had sprinkles!!! Delish!

Day 244: 1 mile - To everyone else, it was a holiday. To me? It was just a normal day off, and I did absolutely nothing. I binged watched NCIS on Netflix and started craving pizza at lunch time. By the time dinner came along I had to shell out some money and I ordered Papa Johns. Mmmm. Pizza! I was so hungry and craving this stuff I think I ate half of a medium pizza in 20 minutes (or less?)

Day 245: 3.11 miles - I did not want to get out of bed this morning, but I eventually did. I ran at a near by park to change the scenery and so that I didn't have to worry about the cars on a busy road that I pass a few times if I were to run closer to my apartment.

Day 246: 0 miles - I skipped cross training today. As I waited for the gym to free up so that I could do the spin cycles I let some thoughts and feelings take over. I ended up on my couch with sugar and my misery. Totally regret when it was time for bed.

Day 247: 5.10 miles - I had the day off from work today (whoo hoo!), and I took full advantage of that. After a good fiver I completely shrugged off my chore duties (my apartment is horrible looking!) I had some St. Louis style pizza with a good friend. Then! I went to White Rock Lake did some volunteer work with For the Love of the Lake who were doing a little private social for singles. It was fun!

Day 248: 3.11 miles - This morning I was able to get up early and my run wasn't bad at all! There was a sweet little breeze that would hit me every so often that told me that fall was slowly but surely coming soon! I had enough time to cool down, eat some eggs, shower, dress, an run to Starbucks for coffee and a chocolate croissant and make it to work on time! Whew!

Day 249: 1 mile - The weather today was amazing, and yet I had to work! Nonetheless when I went for my evening walk the temperature was cool and refreshing! I actually slept with the window open all night!

Total Miles this week: 22.34 Miles

Miles to Date: 512.59 Miles

OMaD - Week 36 Recap

One Mile a Day update of my fitness activity!

August 30 - September 5

Day 236:  5.16 miles - A nice run. This was the last small Sunday run for quite a while!

Day 237: 0 miles - No walk for me today. I was busy having fun before having dinner with the family.

Day 238: 3.11 miles - This was a little tough. I started out later than I typically go cause, you know, I like to sleep (which I know is OK), but my leg/hips were feeling it. But I made good time in some respects... a 5k in 33 minutes and some change. Nice. I'll take it!

Day 239: 2 miles - Cross-training day! Worked on a cycle then did some weight training. Then I promptly ate a big taco salad. Yeeeeah.

Day 240: 4.11 miles - Not a bad run. I was little worried about my energy level since I slept in and didn't give myself to have more than a half tablespoon of peanut butter and two wheat thins (healthy, right?!) to ward off the hunger. At about mile 2.25 or so I yelled out at myself, "I hate hills! Hills are awesome!". Once I got past mile 2.5 and the hills I was feeling pretty good though.

Day 241: 3.10 miles - Good morning run. Finished in time to shower and get out fill the car up with gas and to get a cup of coffee before work. Whew!

Day 242: 0 miles - No walk afterword. I went to a game night with some friends and coworkers after work, and I got home waaaay late. 11pm. Yeah, that's late in marathon training life!

Total Miles this week: 17.48 Miles

Total Miles Thus Far: 490.25 Miles

OMaD - Week 35 Recap

One Mile a Day update of my fitness activity!

August 23 - August 29
Day 229:  7 miles - Not a bad run. The lake wasn't as packed as it was last Sunday, but it was still very popular. I love being part of the running community (can't you tell that I'm writing this when I'm still on my runner's high?).

Day 230: 1 mile - A mile walk after having a tasty treat with a friend today!

Day 231:  3.15 miles - Oh, so early! I keep telling myself that I have to stick the routine!

Day 232:  2.60 miles - Cross training Wednesday! 2.60 miles on the spin cycle!

Day 233: 4.1 miles - First mileage bump up for the medium mid-week run, and with a wonderful temperature to run in to boot!

Day 234:  3.11 miles - last run for the week! I was up at the butt crack of dawn so that I could get the run in, take care of some big chores and make sure I was at work on time at 9am. Whew! I was just tired enough I was almost dozing off when I was stuck at a standstill in rush hour traffic! Thankfully my boss needed caffeine too and I was blissfully sent on a Starbucks run!

Day 235: 0 miles - Rested big time after a long day after work.

Total Miles this week: 20.96 Miles

Total Miles Thus Far: 472.77 Miles

OMaD - Week 34 Recap

One Mile a Day update with a brief cold front mid week!

August 16 - August 22
Day 222: 6.21 miles - The weather was AH-mazing this morning! That meant that White Rock Lake was packed with runners, cyclists, and walkers, but that was OK. I did a really nice steady 10k for my long run, and enjoyed the scenery. Ladies, there are some very nice male runners out there!

Day 223: 1 mile - Doggy walk today!

Day 224: 3.11 miles - It was muggy today, but I did it. Rain is coming!

Day 225: 2.2 miles -I did my miles on a spin cycle for cross training. My apartment complex finally fixed the projector for the workout program they have. I might be able to try out some workout videos soon!

Day 226: 3.13 miles -It feel even more AH-mazing this morning. Hello 60s! I was a little worried because it started raining when I work up this morning, but by the time I got myself out there it had stopped. So nice!

Day 227: 3.12 miles - Last 5k for Week 2 of Marathon Training. It was more humid this morning, and I was started out too fast. Oh, well.

Day 228: 1 mile - A nice stroll before bed.

OMaD - Week 33 Recap

This One Mile a Day update was also the first week of Marathon Training! Ahhhh!

August 9 - August 15
Day 215: 13.29 miles - Badass Brazos Half Marathon! This was a tough, but good race! I finished well after I got some GI troubles at of the way. Read more at the race recap soon!

Day 216: 2 miles - I walked and walked out some of my soreness while catching up with one of my dearest friends. We have lots of bathroom humor, so I had plenty of fodder thanks to the half marathon.

Day 217: 3.11 mile - First run of Marathon Training! I had one achy achilles and still had blisters on my toes, but I felt way better. I wore an old pair of running shoes at work all day (dress code be damned!), and it melted away all of my soreness.

Day 218: 1 mile - I was suppose to do some cross training after work, but lunch didn't agree with me and by the time I got home I could only pull out a mile walk at a slow pace.

Day 219: 3.11 miles - Because my stomach was hurting the night before, I didn't want to wake up to run this morning. I had a later start than I would have preferred. I also had to politely yell a sarcastic "Thank you! So much space!" when I ran past three week walking towards. They took up the entire side walk and they managed to get two across, but it still wasn't space on the narrow side walk. I had to race my arm so that I didn't hit one of them when I passed. I refuse to run the pitted ground to make room for people who are clearly the ones who need to move. Ugh.

Day 220: 3.11 miles - Woke up earlier, which was good. I had just enough time to run, clean, and get to work, but eating a proper breakfast and prepping lunch was out of the question. But at least there weren't many of the walking moms around.

Day 221: 0 miles - Got home from work just to change clothes. My sister and I had dinner at a restaurant called Asian Mint here in Dallas. It was so good! Then I got home and rested.

Total Miles this week: 25.62 miles

Total Miles Thus Far: 432.04 Miles

Beginner Series - Clothes and Shopping... The Addiction!

After I wrote my post about getting into walking/running I realized that I could've talked all day about clothes and shoes in that post! That totally meant that I needed to write another post just on this topic... cause seriously... who doesn't like talking about clothes and shopping and running?

Now, for the sake of... me... I'm going to refer to the clothes as "running clothes." But, these clothes can count towards walkers and cross training people!

Where to Go for Running Clothes
Some people may think that you need to buy all of your clothes at the local running store. You could if you wanted to... and your bank allowed you to too. Some people may only want name brand clothes where you pay for the logo. Then there are people like me that pretty much finds deals wherever she goes to, and if she can score anything Saucony she's doing the happy dance!

So! Where to get your cool running duds? I've bought things from:
  • Target
  • Old Navy (my favorite place right now!)
  • Academy Sports and Outdoors (their BCG brand is inexpensive)
  • Dick's Sporting Goods
  • Local running stores
  • Name Brand website/outlets websites
You may want to also try:
  • Local thrift stores
  • TJMaxx
  • Ross
  • Amazon
  • Outlet malls
Now! Even though I just said you could get stuff at a place other than a running store there are some exceptions to the rules, which I'll mention below!

They say running is one of the cheapest/free-est sports out there... LIE!

Shoes and Socks
The #1 important thing that you need to buy... no matter the cost (cause there is no way around it, really)... is buying fitted running shoes. This is not a "oh, I'll go buy some running shoes at DSW or Target" type shoes. This is go to a running store and talk an employee (who is a runner) and have them fit you in a shoe that is best for your feet. They may have run around the store, outside the store or on a treadmill.

When I first started out running I had crappy cross trainers from Target. I didn't get fitted for real running shoes until a year after my first 5k. I remember walking and jogging in a pair of Saucony Omi going, "Ooooh. Yum!" which is a really good sign when it comes to shoes for me. I've replaced these shoes a couple of times already (running shoes only last about 500 miles).

So! Bottom line... get shoes at a running store!

Now, as for socks! There are so many types! I started out with socks from Target, but switched to socks from the running store that like waaaaaay better. I prefer a little cushion to mine socks. I also like "no shows" cause I dislike seeing socks... and not to mention the not-so-awesome above the ankle sock tan line. Look at the running store and see what peaks your interested.

Bras
You don't have to get running bras at a running store, but the women staff members will know their stuff and help you get fitted. What I like is my local store Run On! has Bras and Breakfast a couple times a year, which is an event for women to be fitted for bras and have some nom noms at the same time!

I have a couple Moving Comfort Fiona bras that have worked out great for me. Come to think of it, I've had them for over a year, but so far I haven't had any huge wear on them. But I'll need to get them replaced soon. I got fitted at the running store because I couldn't find a bra that stopped the bouncing from my B cups at any of the other stores. I've lost a little weight since then, but I'm still feeling secure, but, yeah, I'll be getting some new ones soon.

That being said, I did find one on uber clearance at Old Navy that is great for my cross training days!

Bottoms - Undies
Love these Runderpants!
Ok. There is always the discussion on whether to go commando or to wear a thong or to wear shorts with benefits or to buy runderwear. I'll let in on a secret-that's-not-really-a-secret.... I wear runderwear. I wear compression shorts or capris most of the time. I wish I could wear regular running shorts with attached undies, but I do not want to worry about chafing (who doesn't!?!).

I'm in love with Saucony's hipster style Runderpants. I get full coverage in the back in and they do not ride up! Perfect! They also come in a brief style, but I was worried about coverage. I'm so glad I chose the hipster ones!

There are other brands that have their own runderewear, such as Under Armor, Moving Comfort, and the likes. Target's C9 now have their own undies too. All brands have different cuts too - bikini style or thong.

The choice is yours. You may end up trying several things out before you find the best thing for you.

Bottoms - shorts, capris, skirts, leggings... oh, my!
Oh, bottoms. Something you really need if you end up running commando style! Hee hee!

This is a personal preference choice because all of our bodies are different shapes and sizes. It also depends on the season. Compared to men, women have gobs of choices!
  • shorts with or without benefits
  • skirts with or without benefits
  • compression shorts
  • compression capris
  • compression leggings
  • running dresses (yes, these are real!)
For the warmer season, such as 70* and up, I wear compressions shorts that hit me mid thigh (bermuda style or a little shorter) because I still have enough curves that can cause some serious chafing down there.

For the cooler seasons 55* to 65*, I wear capris that go down to my knees. I just bought some awesome purple ones that I can't wait to wear in the fall!

In the colder season I wear full leggings that may or may not be lined with fleece.

Bottoms cont. - the color choices and those awkward sweat marks!
Everyone... for the most part... want those really cute colored shorts and capris. I admit, so do I. But I am also aware of those awkward sweat marks. You know... the ones that make it look like you peed your pants. Awkward. I know some people don't care... but I want to give newbies a heads up in case they care.

For the most part I only wear black bottoms. I do have ones that are black and charcoal from Old Navy, but I made sure that they don't show sweat. I also have a purple pair of capris, but then again I also tested them. How do I test, you ask. Well, this is gross, but I take a little bit of spit and test the hem area of the bottom to see if the fabric changes color. I know. I know. I know! Gross, but important!

I don't know what else I can say, for those who wear compression style bottoms... think about the sweat marks and if you care what others can see.

Tops
Seriously, there isn't much to worry about when it comes to tops. I wear tanks in the warmer/hot season, tees in the spring/fall and long sleeve in the winter time.

I will make a point about seams though. I tend to wear tops that are a little loser in the midsection just because I have to fit my shoulders, which are broad, first. I've tried some Academy BCG tops and I could feel the seams, even though it was suppose to be smooth seamed. Try the shirts on and move your arms like you would when you're walking/running. Do you feel any think rub? If you don't try a different size or a completely different top!

Outerwear
What goes in this section is going to be the extra stuff like hats, gloves and pullovers. Most of this comes to personal preference, like a lot of things.

Fabrics
Seriously. Do. Not. Wear. Cotton! Just say no to chafing! Find Dry Fit fabrics that wick moisture from the skin.  Trust me.

Runner's World What to Wear
Still wondering what to wear when it's a certain temperature outside? Runner's World can help you with their What to Wear advice page. Just select the info and it'll tell you what RW recommends. I've done this loads of time. After while you'll learn what is comfortable for you after you run/walk through the different seasons a few times.

The ADDICTION!
Seriously, folks. Runners tend to have an addition to running clothes and shoes. You can never have enough. Never. Ever. I mentioned this to my friend J and she just nodded her head in agreement. Running is not an inexpensive sport!

Wearing a race shirt on race day
There is always talk among runners about wearing the official shirt for the race you are running. Some say it's a faux pas. Some don't care. I know some people actually worry about this. To read just a tip of the iceberg, read this article here. I generally don't wear the shirt until after the race because I'm superstitious.

P.S. - In the time that spent working on this post... I've bought at least three more workout shirts, new running socks and a visor. Then! During Tax Free weekend I bought a pair of Oofos and a cool weather jacket that I will most likely wear even when I'm not running!

Seasoned runners... do you have any recommendations?

OMaD - Week 31 Recap

This week in the One Mile A Day update.......

July 26 - August 1

Day 201: 1 mile - The slugness from the night before rolled over to this morning and by the time I already I woke up after unconsciously snoozing my alarm for a long time it as already 80 degrees outside. Plus, I had no motivation and did not feel awesome. I should've SIUP, but I decided to go back to bed until it was ready to go to my Sunday work. But after work, a simple dinner, I met some coworkers for froyo before I did my mile walk.

Day 202:  6.2 miles - 10k done. There was a lot of walking since the heat was getting to me and there was barely a breeze. Starting to wonder about the upcoming Badass Brazos Half Marathon in the coming weeks. We'll see. Race day I tend to do better than I expect.

Day 203: 1 mile - Walked a mile after work. Nothing too exciting.

Day 204: 4.2 mile - Had the day off and spent most of it trying to find a place to stay for my vacation. I went to a Foam Rolling Clinic with Airrosti at a Luke's Locker. Then I had a conversation with an awesome dude Phil about running form. When I got back home I did 3.1 miles on the cycle. Then a mile walk after dinner. Oh, and I sorta cleaned my apartment. Hee her.

Day 205: 1 mile - Finally found a spot to stay while on vacation! Whew! Not what I really wanted, but with short notice I'll take it!

Day 206: 1 mile - Busy day at work. Could barely eat my dinner at book club, but at least had room for a weak daiquiri. A long 1 mile walk while venting to my one really best friend who lives far away.

Day 207: 1 mile -Another long day at work. I was late by a whole hour cause I had to get the battery jumped in the rental car... cause I'm SPECIAL! I'm so ready to check out of this life! Hee hee.

Total Miles this week: 15.4 mile

Total Miles Thus Far: 389.02 Miles

OMaD - Week 30 Recap

This week in the One Mile A Day challenge update with a side of Runner Perks and Problems and just life! We've reached the 200th day of the year!

July 19 - July 25

Day 194:  9.32 Miles - Managed another 15k training run. This time at a park near my place. I was hoping for 10, but I pretty much had to walk most of the last mile because my legs finally felt fatigued. Plus, it was already around 8 or 8:30 in the morning. So it was toasty! After a healthy breakfast I had a protein bar for lunch then bought some froyo to celebrate Ice Cream Day (I'm counting froyo in this holiday!). I made my first hummus using my Ninja and roasted some spicy cauliflower for a night at Shakespeare in the Park.

Oh, the Runner Perks and Problems... Guilt-Free Froyo and Runner's Tan!

Day 195: 1 Mile - I chilled and binged on NCIS via Netflix today. But I was productive at the same time. I put away my clean clothes... which is a big deal y'all! I even made my first ever maxi skirt, which turned out a little more billowy that other maxis, but it's very pretty! I found this DIY blog post via Pinterest (oh, Pinterest, my addiction!). I ate healthy all day, but decided to get a yummy what would've been my favorite greek salad if the to go waitress wasn't distracted by her family eating dinner caesar salad and sweet potato fries for dinner. Tasty!

Check out that angelic glow around me in my finish picture!

Day 196: 4.1 Mile - Got up uber early to run a 5k around the apartments before my insurance adjuster showed up to take a look at my poor car. Then a really busy day at work, which a side of sinus headaches on one side of my head. I got one of those new Strawberry Acai Refreshers at Starbucks today. It was pretty tasty, but I don't think Acai berry is for me. Check out the pretty color and the cool cup, thought! When I got home later a mile walk to decompress. What. A. Day.

Day 197: 3.4 Mile -Since I had plans after work (and I had to consider waiting for the gym to free up after a class) I work up at the awful hour of 6:45 again to use the spin cycle for 20 minutes, which was 2.4 miles. I then walked a mile un-wibbly-wobbly my legs. After work I did a couple of errands before hitting up the Alamo Drafthouse's Back to the Future Quote-along! Great Scott!

Day 198: 0 Mile - No time for a walk today after a long day at work and big chores to doe when I got home. By the way, have you ever woken up to realize that you have no coffee in the house? I did. I laid in bed weighing my options on what to do to fix that problem. Do I go run then drive then walk to the local Starbucks or drive to another coffee shop down the way? Or wait till I head out to work? Hmmmm. I decided to sleep in and wait till I was heading out to work.

Day 199: 0 Mile -Went to see Shakespeare in the Park with friends right after work... so no walk today either.

Day 200: 0 Mile - It wasn't that I was lacking energy or felt bad or was out late crazy late or was tired... but all day it was I didn't want to do work and if I got a chance to nap I would. Then when I got home, it was NCIS binge watching for the rest of the night. It was slug day and it was slug night.

Total Miles this week: 7.50 Mile

Total Miles Thus Far: 373.62 Miles

Beginner Series - How to Get Into Walking/Running

Maybe this blog post is a little misleading. Or, at least, that's how I feel as I starting to write this post.

I have a friend who wants to start running. I agree that she should start out with walking, especially since I don't know her history of physical workout, but want to keep her from injury and from losing motivation early on (two that are major killers in getting started).

Instead of throwing all of this info at her like word vomit (If you haven't noticed yet, I talk too much when I'm excited about something I love... or whenever I get a chance to talk... That means I can be a bit overwhelming to some people... and I'm trying to work on that... which means there may be more posts on this blog soon enough! Ok... back on to topic!), I thought I'd write this post. Hopeully she'll be interested in reading it sometime.

I do not claim to be an expert or a coach. I am not a physician of any sort and claim no responsibility to injuries that may happen when following my recommendations. Please consult your personal physician before starting a new fitness routine.

Benefits of Walking
Dot's Recommendation
If you want to take it slow and ease into a running habit, I recommend just walking either

1. 1 mile at an easy, casual pace

2. For 20 - 30 minutes, regardless of distance

How often should you do this, you ask? Every day or at least three times a week.

For the most part I walk one mile every day of the week during my One Mile A Day challenge I created for myself. I know that it may be daunting to find the time to do this every day (believe I know!), so I would recommend the minimum of three times a week.

You can obviously progress your walk to more than a mile or how often you do it during the week. Just remember to take it nice and slow!

And for anyone who is a little skeptical of walking is less beneficial than running, read these:

Running Apps
Now! I'm sure you're wondering, "how do I know how far is a mile?" or "How do I keep track of my activity?" As with everything and anything these days... there's an app for that!

Here are ones that I've used extensively before I got my Garmin:

MapMyWalk or MapMyRun
Free, but there is an upgraded price to get rid of the adds. These apps are technically the same, but each is automatically defaulted to walks or runs, but you can change your workout type to whatever your are doing. This app gives you live GPS tracking and all the simple bells and whistles that anyone really needs. You could also track your nutrition too. There's a website that you can log into where you can create your own courses too.

C25K App
Inexpensive. This is the popular running program that gets you ready for a 5k run. It starts you out really, really slowly and has lots of timed intervals. I would recommend trying this app or any app that has a similar program.

Zombies, Run! 5k Training App
Inexpensive. I haven't used this app, but have heard great things about it. If you like zombies. If you like playing games. If you want to try out running. Try this app!

Charity Miles App
Free. I haven't used this app, but would like to if I remember to. Your milage regardless of walking or running money will be donated to a charity of choice that is part of program. Pretty cool!

Dot's Recommendation
I know, I know, it's hard to choose an app now! And I only listed a few that are out there! Gah! I would recommend with the MapMyWalk or MapMyRun if you just want to keep it simple for now and just want to do your own thing. Once you're ready for a "training program" then try out the recommended C25K app or any other C25k app.

Beginner Running 101
Now, let's talk a little about running. I'm not sure what to say, actually... so I'll share how I started out.

Many moons ago, I had about a month to get ready for my first 5k (and this is from not running. at. all). I picked the C25K app to get me started. It was hard, but it worked. The timed intervals were hard... such as "Man!? I have run for another 30 seconds?!" after already running for 30 seconds. (I have to laugh now cause I'm saying something similar, but only it's like, "Man! I have to run ::another:: 4 miles?!).

After I ran my first 5k race I tried to keep up the running training app thing, but stopped after awhile. A few months later I picked up running again with other people, and started using a GPS app and doing minute intervals on my own. It pretty much started out with a 2 minute run/1 minute walk interval and it progressed to 4/1 intervals.

Dot's Recommendation
Use a training app or a GPS app and start running with an interval style. Have lots of walk break with little spurts of running. Then as you progress in your fitness level, increase how long you run. Soon enough you'll be running longer and longer.

How Do You Find the Time?
Oh, time. Like everyone else in the world... I don't not have enough time. Or at least I don't think I do. You just have to make time, that's all (I actually had to stop a few times over the past week to make sure I have time to do my daily mile walk).

Seriously, I don't know how some people do it!

Dot's Recommendations

1.Walk on your lunch/dinner hour at work.

2. Walk after dinner, before you get too comfy on the couch after eating yummy food.

3. If you're a morning person (power to ya!) wake up and extra 30min and do your think while the coffee is brewing!

4. Make it a friend bonding/group thing! There's no better way to make yourself do your thing when you have someone else holding you accountable!

Runner's High... It's Real!
A friend of mine did not truly understand the Runner's High was a real thing. It is so real. Besides being in love, it is the most awesome thing in the world. All the hormones hit you, and you just feel so good ... even if you're achy and sore!

After finishing my first 5k, I was hooked. Then about two years later, after I finished the Austin Half Marathon, my knees actually hurt (that was the first time I ever said the H-word after a race!), but I was so happy and satisfied I didn't care! This is addicting sh$#, people! And it's legal in all 50 states!

Learn more about what's going on with that awesome Runner's High read this What's behind runner's high? - Shape Magazine.

Also! I have to mention that walking and runner is great for mental health too just because it helps you refocus onto something else.

Important Things to Remember
Here are some things to remember:

Listen to your body.
Walk when you need to walk. When you feel like running, run! If you feel like your heart is about to pop out of your chest because of your walking/running... walk or stop and breathe!

Once you start running more, and you're wanting to run more... invest in running shoes!
I don't mean going to Target or DSW to get running shoes. Go to your local running store and get fitted. Not all running shoes are created equal and the same goes for our feet! Just tell that to my size 11 flat feet. You know when you're starting log your new life as a walker/runner when you get excited about your new pair of shoes! When you start posting pictures about them on social media, you've made your official "shoe p@rn" post!

Mmmm. Check out my "shoe p@rn"
that I posted a few months back!

Not all aches and pains mean you're injured?
It's OK to be sore. It's OK To be sore for several days. There is a different between sore and an in pain, however. I know it's hard to tell sometimes. But if the pain does not go away after a few days or walk/runs then maybe something is wrong. But! Use your best judgement. If you want to see a doctor... I'm not stopping you!

Remember to BREATHE!
I'll admit it. I don't breathe the right way, and I tend to push myself too much. When you're running you want to make sure you can not only breathe but be able to talk/have a conversation with out any struggle.

During the summer bring water with you!
If it's hot, y'all! So make sure you have a water bottle near by or with you or you're at a place that has working water fountains. You have to be get to the water easily so you won't die of thirst go without a drink for too long. Remember you sweat a lot during the summer!

Sunscreen!
Remember to wear sunscreen when it's bright and shiny out! Skin cancer is a real concern, especially for long distance runners who spend at least an hour or more for a run. Slather on that SPF 30 or 45 to protect yourself for burns!

Dress Accordingly
I'm guilty of this too... You ask, what should I wear? Well, it depends on the weather and how cold or hot you typically feel. When you're running your body will heat up about 20 degrees... So! To make it simple, wear workout clothes that you find at Target, Walmart or Old Navy. No cotton cause you do not want any chafing.

If you walk around after dinner, and it's dark outside...
You always want to be safe whenever you are walking/running. But at night ake sure you're safe on a sidewalk that is well lit! Wear something reflective! I walk around my apartment buildings, which are pretty will lit up, but there are dark patches, especially where I have to cross the road. Check out my post about Running Safely At Night for some more ideas!

Once you start getting that urge to try for a 5k race... DO IT!
Always keep an eye out on local fun runs. There are lots of them now a days. Some are really well priced while some can be pricier. My first 5k was the Hot Chocolate Run and it was pricey, but the goodie back and the chocolate fondue at the end of it is SO WORTH IT! Smaller runs could be for charity or a local cause. Like I said, keep your eye out or just search the inter webs for upcoming races. When you feel that tug in your chest to do one... and it doesn't matter if you're still walking or running... register and have fun!

I could go on and on, but I don't want to overwhelm you with too much info! Hope this has helped you in any way. Leave any questions or ideas in the comments area!
